What is an Import Export Code?

Import Export Code is a 10-digit identification number issued by the Director General of the Foreign Trade Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Any individual or business entity must import goods into or export goods out of India.

IS an IEC mandatory for all businesses?

Yes, an IEC is essential for any business entity that intends to engage in international trade. It is the primary document required for customs clearance and for remitting money to foreign countries (for imports) or receiving payments from abroad (for exports).

Who needs to apply for an IEC?

All individuals or organizations who are proprietors, partners, directors, or managing trustees of any firm undertaking the export/import operations from India have to mandatorily apply for an IEC.

Which documents do you require for the IEC application?

Generally, the following documents are required:

  • PAN Card: Of the individual or the business entity.
  • Identity and Address Proof: Aadhaar Card, Voter’s ID card, or passport.
  • Business Address Proof: Please provide us with any one of the following in the name of your business, either a sale deed, lease deed, or utility bill, like electricity or telephone, or water bill.
  • Bank Account Details: Bank Certificate of the Company’s Bank Account or Cancelled Cheque of the same.
  • Digital Signature: A Class-3 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) may be required for the digital signing of the application.
Can I have more than one IEC?

No. An IEC is issued against a single PAN. You cannot hold multiple IECs for different businesses if they operate under the same PAN.

Do I need an IEC for Personal imports\ exports?

In general, an IEC is not necessary for goods imported or exported for personal use, unless they are intended for trade, manufacture or commercial use. But it is always advisable to review individual customs regulations for the type of goods being shipped.

Is it possible to export services without an IEC?

If you are exporting services (such as IT consulting, digital marketing, or graphic design) and the value of your export is significant, you may still need an IEC to receive inward remittances through certain banking channels. It is highly recommended to obtain an IEC to avoid any delays in payment processing from your international clients.

How long does it take to receive the IEC after applying?

Since the process is now fully digitized, the IEC is often generated very quickly—sometimes within a few hours to 2–3 working days—provided that all your documents are correct and the details in your application match your PAN card and bank records exactly.
